Summary:

A dementia-friendly environment includes the areas of the home environment and the wider social environment, which work independently and are developed by each profession, such as social work, nursing, occupational therapy, architecture, applied psychology. Unfortunately, overlooked are the person as a personality, his or her life history and habits; an environment in which he or she feels comfortable; social interactions that significantly influence the later course of dementia; choices in performing activities and maintaining the autonomy of people with dementia that are not sufficiently developed in Slovenia (e.g., the area of stimulating activities, the use of information and communication technology), and the acceptance of dementia (and people with dementia) in the community. The pilot implementation of long-term care projects showed weaknesses in the area of long-term care for people with dementia, a weak possibility of choosing different ICT tools, and many opportunities for urgent improvements in the area of interdisciplinary integration of professions. With the project we want to go beyond the view of institutional care for people with dementia - care in - having a relationship, knowing the person and adapting the environment and daily life to them. Regardless of whether a person with dementia lives at home or in an institutional setting, it is possible, with various improvements and changes, to have an extremely positive impact on slowing down or later developing dementia and its progression, contributing to the quality of life of people with dementia and their family members, and preventing caregiver burnout (both formal and informal).
