Conceptions of 'extreme circumstances', their causes and consequences. Role of social work in extreme circumstances. Foreign and domestic experiences of natural (quakes, floods) and human-made (wars, developmental projects) disasters. Methods of social work in extreme circumstances (assesment of needs, participation in the planning of measures, assurance of emergent aid for the neediest, enticement of self-organisation). Long-term significance of extreme circumstances for the community and the individual. Experiences of solidarity. Spontaneous notions of appropriate and fair assistance. Post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychosocial methods of work with traumatised people.
