- The role of research in social work
The scientific method and other ways of knowing: sources of knowledge, principles of the scientific method, the concept of methodology. - Research in social work as a social relationship: ethics and politics of research in social work.
- Types of research
- Experimental research designs
- Designing a conventional quantitative survey Preliminary phase: survey proposal; applying for calls for research projects. Formulation of the problem: analysis of the problem situation and formulation of hypotheses. Definition of concepts, variables: conceptualization and operationalization, research model. Measurement: measuring scales, measuring instruments, metric characteristics. Population and sampling: defining the population, principles of sampling, types of samples.
- Methods of collecting empirical data: Observation: characteristics, types, problems, techniques. Questioning (research interview and survey): characteristics, types, problems, techniques (questionnaire construction). Analysis of secondary material.
- Using computer programs to find secondary data sources.
- Reporting on empirical research and dissemination of findings.
